During the combustion process, the internal combustion engine produces exhaust gas emissions as a byproduct. And unless this exhaust gas is removed, it can accumulate inside the engine and cause it to break down. One of the many supporting systems in your Ford auto, the exhaust system is a collection of devices designed to remove the exhaust gas from the engine. Different Ford models have different exhaust system configurations, but most of these share common components such as the exhaust manifold, exhaust pipe, catalytic converter, and muffler. One of the two kinds of manifolds in the engine, the exhaust manifold collects the exhaust gas from the cylinders and sends them to the exhaust pipe. The exhaust pipe then transfers the exhaust to the catalytic converter, where it will be cleaned of toxic chemicals. And once it has been cleaned, the exhaust then travels to another length of exhaust pipe and into the muffler, where the engine noise carried by the exhaust is canceled out.
